After a successful stint at Appalachian State, Sparky Woods was named the new head football coach at South Carolina on Feb. 21, 1989, following the sudden death of Gamecocks coach Joe Morrison. Woods posted a 24-28-23 record in five years at South Carolina. The Gamecocks opened the 1992 season with five straight losses and many players openly demanded Woods’ resignation. Woods stood firm, and the Gamecocks won five of their last six games. However, a 4-7 mark in 1993 sealed his fate.
Offensive lineman Jackson Carman of Fairfield, Ohio, named a final five of Clemson, Ohio State, Southern Cal, Florida State and Wisconsin during an interview on WCPO radio in Cincinnati. Carman said he won’t make his decision until December and is looking for where he will be the most comfortable and feel most at home. He also cited Clemson offensive line coach Robbie Caldwell as a major reason Clemson is strong with him.
