Breaking News: Easter egg event Saturday cancelled

You and I are just going to have to make our own minds up

    Willie,

Are we 100 percent sure that School District of Oconee County is correct and transparent on reporting positive COVID cases?

    Willie says:

Correct as in accurate? Yeah, I think so. Transparent? Not even a little.

    Willie,

I just read where the county administrator and council have proposed $585,000 in raises for staff for the third year in a row. I can’t believe they would even consider this in the current economic times we are in. The paper is correct, bad timing, really bad timing!

    And..

    Willie,

If our county government has so much money that they can give employees raises for three years in a row, why don’t they cut taxes and let the people paying them have a raise instead of county employees? I vote for that!

    And…

    Willie,

What is going on with this county? I am reading that the county is asking for almost $600,000 for raises for the third year in a row, and the county council is for it? If they were using their own money instead of taxpayers’, then they wouldn’t let this continue. More than $4,000 in three years is atrocious! When do they take their final vote, Willie? We all need to go and tell them enough is enough!

    Willie says:

Seems like the raises have a few feathers ruffled. This ol’ fella likes raises, but I think I’d agree with some of you that it isn’t the right time. According to the Employers Association of South Carolina, which tracks such things, unemployment in Oconee sat at 7.5 percent in July versus 3.1 percent at this time last year.

According to my calculator, that’s almost 1,200 more of you out of work now than last year. Let’s settle this down first before we hand out more money.

    Willie,

Multiple credible news sources are quoting Donald Trump as having said, “Americans who have died in war are suckers and losers.” This quote, and the story behind it, more than anything Donald Trump has ever said, deserves to be front-page news in every newspaper in the country. Pass on your thoughts to our brave military veterans please.

    Willie says:

Alyssa Farah, a White House spokeswoman, emailed the author of the report Jeffery Goldburg this statement shortly after his story was posted: “This report is false. President Trump holds the military in the highest regard. He’s demonstrated his commitment to them at every turn: delivering on his promise to give our troops a much-needed pay raise, increasing military spending, signing critical veterans reforms and supporting military spouses. This has no basis in fact.”

Did he say it? Did he not? Why are all the sources anonymous? Just when I was starting to doubt it, the story was confirmed by Fox News and a couple other outlets using their own sources, so who knows? I hope he didn’t say those things, but they do sound like things he might say. So you and I are just going to have to make our own minds up on what we believe it sounds like.

    Willie,

I am avoiding everything I ever did in Clemson until students behave. I don’t park in the garage, go to church, use the barbershop, go to the dentist, go into the gift shop, use the post office or buy any food. All it took was one drive through town for me to leave until there is a very effective vaccine.

    Willie says:

The key to the safety and successful business climate of Clemson (or any city for that matter) during this pandemic is the wise decisions made by the folks who live there. In some cities, that includes both college students and city residents. We all need to act like we care about our neighbors.

    Willie,

I was elated to see where the Oktoberfest 2020 committee in Walhalla had the good sense to cancel. I was extremely disappointed to see that the vote was so close: 7-6. It seems there are still some Covidiots who don’t realize we are talking about human lives being at risk at events such as Oktoberfest. Thank you to the seven members who held the lives of people over dollars!

    Willie says:

It’s definitely a difficult decision. I know the folks at The Journal faced a similar one on their Brew & ’Que that we just missed. Applefest in Westminster is gone, too. Hopefully we can get this thing behind us and have a good year next year with all our festivals and events.

    Y’all come back now, y’hear?

    Willie
