Defensive end Brenton Cox of Stockbridge, Ga. — Class of 2018 — is emerging as one of the next major prospects from the Peach State and he has offers from Clemson and South Carolina, among several others. Cox already has a strong feeling for Clemson and has included the Tigers in his top 10 along with Georgia, Ohio State, Tennessee, Alabama, North Carolina, Ole Miss, Virginia Tech, Louisville and Florida State, though he said he remains open to all schools.
Neither Clemson nor South Carolina have ever been, or will ever be, able to build a championship-caliber football program solely on in-state recruiting. That’s just a numbers game. But what the Palmetto State might lack in quantity, it often makes up for in quality.
Last Friday, Clemson held its annual All-In Cookout. Tiger coach Dabo Swinney invited a small but highly regarded group of uncommitted prospects to join current players and current commitments for an evening of food and fun — with a little recruiting thrown in.
Madison (Ga.) defensive end M.J. Webb has offers from Clemson and South Carolina and thinks highly of both at this point.
South Carolina added wide receiver Shawn Smith (6-0, 170) of Brunswick, Ga., and running back Kyshaun Bryan (5-10, 190) of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., to the 2017 commitment list on Saturday after both recruits attended the social gathering put on by Gamecocks’ head coach Will Muschamp and his staff.
